Why you may require root canal treatment

If you have had a cavity inside your tooth, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria to grow and multiply. Without treatment, the bacteria will infect the nerve space inside the tooth and cause significant pain. This can spread to other areas of the face and cause the supporting bone of the tooth to dissolve away.

Root canal treatment is a procedure to treat the infection inside a tooth. It generally means the infection is very advanced and deep inside a tooth. The procedure involves gentle local anaesthesia around the tooth and flushing inside of the tooth with special medicine and antibiotics. The procedure generally lasts 1-2 hours depending on how much infection there is inside the tooth. We finish 90% of our root canal treatment in one visit however if your infection is advanced, it may require 2-3 visits before all the infection is cleared. After the root canal is complete and the infection has resolved, the tooth will require a crown due to its high risk of breakage when eating.

We understand some patients have had negative experiences with root canal treatment so we have made an extra effort to ensure your treatment is as comfortable as possible. In most cases, root canals are no more uncomfortable than getting a filling— and we offer comfort options that can put you in a calm, relaxed state while performing this simple procedure.
